Then

If all I see is here and now,
Then hope at once eludes me.
For this is not where I belong;
This world is not what soothes me.

It lacks the peace I want to feel
And there’s no satisfaction,
And if it’s all that will exist,
Despair is my reaction.

But when I turn my longing gaze
Upon that tearless city,
Then hope returns to fill my heart
And joy is set before me.

For then the distance will be gone
And sin will be no more
And I’ll be with the One I love
And all will be restored.

And so I must remind myself
Again, again, again,
To keep my thoughts on future things,
On how it will be then.
